On a printed page, the type area is the area used for text and images. Technical specifications play a part in determining the size of the type area in relation to the entire page, while other design-related conditions can apply to a greater or lesser extent, depending on the characteristics of the article being printed. Some typical elements of a printed page lie outside the type area, for example margin comments and page numbers. Footnotes and column headers however are part of the type area.
