(European Color Initiative) A group of experts involved in the media-neutral processing of color data in digital publication systems. It was founded in Hamburg in June 1996 at the initiative of the publishing houses Bauer, Burda, Gruner + Jahr and Springer. The ECIs goals include processing and exchanging color data across different media using the color management standards of the International Color Consortium (ICC), harmonizing data exchange formats between customers and service providers in the publication process, defining guidelines (for example covering the color space or data format) for exchanging color data for print media, publishing ICC color profiles for associated tools, publishing information, and establishing ICC-based proofing processes that are recognized throughout the industry.
