Curcuma

Plant, also known as Indian saffron, used primarily as a source of the herb turmeric which is particularly popular in India. The tuber of the plant also contains the colorant curcumin (actually curcumin, demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin) which gives curried dishes their characteristic yellow color. Curcumin is not very lightfast and is therefore mainly used for dyeing fabrics. Because curcumin does not dissolve in water, but is soluble in ether and alcohol, it is also used in varnishes.
